  Interview 专家访谈
  
  Bally Total Fitness is the largest health club in North America. In cooperation with the China Sports Industry, Bally has recently started to bring to China its forty years experience of providing comprehensive health and fitness services. With its state-of-the-art facilities, professional management and friendly customer service they are already making headlines. In this issue Rudi talks to Cliff Hsia, Vice-General Manager of the Jianwai Soho branch in Beijing.
  
  倍力健身俱乐部是北美最大的健身俱乐部。最近,通过与中体产业公司的合作,倍力公司开始往中国引进其在健身行业各个领域中长达40年的经验。他们拥有最好的设备、专业化的管理和亲情化的客户服务,并已经开始崭露头角。本期栏目中,Rudi走访了克立弗·夏,而后者就是该公司位于北京建外SOHO的分部的副总经理。
  
  Bilingual: How did you get started in the fitness business?
  你是怎么加入到健身行业中来的?
  
  Cliff: Well I got started in the fitness industry by first, you know, ①working out; ②signing up for a gym in the U.S. When I was in college I became a member of Bally's. Of course, before that I was always interested in sports. Getting Older! So I decided I wanted to ③keep up with the fitness level. I wanted to go to a very professional type club. And that's what I found in Bally's in America. From there I gained a real interest in fitness. I graduated college and I decided I wanted a chance to come to Beijing to learn some Chinese. I knew that Bally was doing something here in China. They were doing something really big. They're creating the fitness industry here in China. From there I started in the club. I worked in sales. I worked in personal training; I participated in a few months of management training. From there I came to this club and I'm now here as the Assistant-General Manager.
  
  嗯,我从事健身工作起初是,你知道,是因为我自己也健身,并报名参加了一家美国健身房的课程。在我上大学的时候,我就成为了倍力俱乐部的会员。当然,在那之前,我对体育一直都很感兴趣。自己在变老!所以,我决定要保持好健康的体魄。我想去一个非常专业的俱乐部。而美国的倍力正是这样一家俱乐部。从那时起,我真的对健身产生了兴趣。大学毕业后,我决定要寻找一个机会到北京去学习汉语。我得知了倍力正在中国开展项目。他们确实是想做一番大事。而且他们正在中国开创健身业的先河。之后,我便在俱乐部中谋得了一份工作。我做过销售工作。我从事过私人教练工作,并参加过几个月的管理培训。之后,我来到了这家俱乐部,目前在这里担任副总经理的职务。
  
  Bilingual: What's the difference between gyms in the United States and gyms in China?
  美国的健身房和中国的健身房有何不同?
  
  Cliff: Gyms in America are made for the masses. It's a big huge gym, a lot of equipment, a lot of people. It's very convenient. In China, because it's just started, it's become kind of a luxury item. People come to gyms to relax, to get better bodies, improve their health and they pay top dollar for the gym.
  
  美国健身房的服务对象是大众。场馆宽敞,设备很全,人员众多。健身房非常方便。在中国,由于健身房刚刚兴起,它已经成为某种奢侈的活动。人们来健身房是为了放松、增强体质和锻炼体魄,为此他们会支付高额费用。
  
  Bilingual: How do you adapt your services for Chinese customers?
  你们如何来针对中国的顾客调整服务项目呢?
  
  Cliff: Well, first of all, the situation in China is that for the majority of customers it's their first time entering a fitness gym in their life. Now that people are becoming more aware of the fitness industry they have an interest. That's the first step. Our services are kind of like raising a child. They don't know how to use the machines. They don't know what they need to do to achieve their goals. Each person who signs up as a member is accompanied by a personal trainer for a few classes for free. We make sure that every person who signs up here is on the right track.
  
  嗯,首先,中国的情况是,大多数人是有生以来第一次接触到健身房这个事物。现在人们开始更多地了解健身这个行业,所以他们产生了兴趣。这是第一步。我们的服务项目有点类似于养育小孩。他们不知道如何来使用这些器械。他们不了解如何去做才能达到他们的目标。每个报名成为会员的人都会被指派一名私人教练来对其进行指导,而且在刚开始上课的时候这是免费的。我们要确保每个到这里报名的人都能步入正轨。
  
  Bilingual: A lot of young Chinese people think that a foreign gym must be very expensive. Is that true?
  许多中国人认为,外国人开的健身房一定收费很高。是这样吗?
  
  Cliff: If you come to a good gym, like Bally's, you will get every penny's worth, and even more.
  如果你去一家好的健身房,如倍力,你就会感到物有所值,甚至是超值的。
  
  Bilingual: Why do you think gyms are becoming popular in China now?
  你认为,现在是什么原因使健身房在中国广受欢迎了呢?
  
  
  Cliff: The main reason, I think, is because of the Olympics in 2008. Chinese people know that by 2008 China and Beijing has to ④be in tune with what's going on in the fitness industry. The China market is now at just about the right time. It's very exciting. From my experience, people who come to the gym show a real interest.
  主要的原因,我认为,是2008年的奥运会。中国人清楚,到2008年的时候,中国和北京必须顺应健身业的潮流趋势。而现在,正是进入中国市场的契机。这是令人兴奋的。就我的经验来讲,到健身房来的都是确实对此感兴趣的人。
  
  Bilingual: What kind of people are your most typical customers?
  你们那儿最典型的顾客是哪类群体?
  
  
  Cliff: Typical customers are Chinese people; Chinese people who have no fitness background at all. They maybe played sports when they were younger. But they never had some kind of professional fitness oriented program.
  典型的顾客就是中国人;那些根本就没有健身经历的中国人。他们可能在更年轻的时候参加过体育锻炼。但他们绝对没有参加过专业的、以健身为目的的活动。
  
  Bilingual: Do you design work-out plans for them?
  你为他们设计锻炼计划吗?
  
  Cliff: For every member who comes into our club we give them a personal trainer. Their first meeting will be a fitness assessment. We evaluate five things: muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility and balance, and body composition. The work-out plan is catered to every different customer's needs. For example, somebody might be overweight. In this example, they might have to do a lot of cardiovascular moves like running and swimming. Another example might be a member who wants to increase muscular strength. Maybe they're a little skinnier than the average person. Their main focus would be using the free weights and the resistance equipment.


我们会为每一位到我们俱乐部来的人分配一名私人教练。他们第一次见面就将进行健康评估的活动。我们会评估五项指标:肌肉强度、肌肉耐力、心血管耐力、灵活与平衡性,以及体态。锻炼计划将迎合每位顾客的不同需求。举例来说,有些人可能体重超标。这种情况下,他们可能得多做一些锻炼心血管功能的运动,如跑步和游泳。再如,可能有人想增强肌肉强度。他们也许比一般人稍微瘦一些。那么,他们的主要精力就将集中在使用负重器械和抗力器械上。
  
  Bilingual: How long does it usually take to see results after you start?

  Cliff: Of course, that all depends on the member. If you want to put in a good effort and if you are really dedicated to seeing a change in your body or seeing a change in your health level you could probably see some results in a few months.
  当然,这全要依照会员本人的情况而定。如果你想好好努力,如果你真的想看到自己的身体或健康水平有所变化,你就能在几个月内见到成效。
  
  Bilingual: For somebody who is now considering going to a gym but does not know how to choose the right gym to go to and what to do when they get there, what advice would you give them?

  Cliff: Come to Bally Total Fitness! (Laughs) It all depends on what their needs are and what they want out of a gym. From a customer's perspective you want a top-notch service, you want to be treated well. When you come to a club you want to feel comfortable, like it's your second home.

  Everyone is different. The type of exercise equipment to be used should be decided according to your own personal experience, fitness level and goals. The following are a few of the most popular types of gym equipment and their uses.
  每个人都是有差别的。对于自己要选择使用的锻炼器械,要根据自己的个人(健身)经历、健康状况和目标而定。下面就介绍了一些健身房中最受欢迎的器械以及它们的用途。
  
  Cardiovascular心血管功能训练
  
  Exercises that reduce weight and increase fitness are called cardiovascular exercises. The word "cardiovascular" refers to anything to do with the heart or blood vessels. A good work-out usually will involve 30 to 40 minutes and a fair amount of sweat.
  旨在减肥和提高健康水平的练习被称为心血管功能练习。"cardiovascular"是指与心脏和血管相关的事物。一项效果明显的锻炼活动要达到30到40分钟的运动量和相当程度的出汗量。
  
  Treadmill 跑步机
  
  The treadmill is one of the most popular types of exercise machine around and no gym is complete without one. In good gyms the treadmills will include preset programs as well as having manual settings. Walking, jogging and running are excellent ways to lose weight and ⑤get in shape.

  Elliptical Machine 椭圆健身机
  
  To avoid shock to the knees the elliptical machine was designed. This machine is sometimes known as a cross-trainer. It provides the same benefits as the treadmill but it's a much smoother work-out. The handles are designed so that the user will move their arms in a similar fashion to running.

  Also known as a stationary bike, the exercise bike is one of the most popular types of exercise equipment in the world. It is often found in the home and all gyms will have at least a few. You can have a 30-minute cycle, burn some calories and watch TV at the same time. And rain can be no excuse for a day off!
  健身车还被叫做原地自行车,是世界上最受欢迎的锻炼器械之一。在私人住宅中也经常可以寻觅到它的身影,而所有的健身房也都至少备有一些这样的器械。你可以骑30分钟,消耗一些热量,并且在骑车锻炼的同时看看电视节目。这样,下雨可就不能成为你请假休息的理由了!

  This machine simulates climbing stairs or steps. As such, it really burns calories as well as toning the legs and buttocks. This one is very popular with female masochists.

  Weight Training 负荷训练
  
  The aim of weight training is to strengthen, build or tone muscles not burn fat or help you lose weight. Usually, exercising with weights involves performing reps and sets. The word "rep" means repetition.
  负荷训练的目的是使肌肉变得结实、发达或美观,而不是消耗脂肪或有助于你减肥。通常,负荷练习包含重复练习和量化分组练习。"rep"的意思就是重复。
  Weight training equipment comes in two forms, cable and free weights. Cable machines allow users to perform exercises without handling the weights themselves. The weights are connected to the machine by cables. The advantage of this is that the machine controls the motion for you.
  负荷训练器械有两类:绳索拉力器和负重器械。绳索拉力器可以让使用者在无须自己负重的情况下进行练习。重量组件经由绳索与机器相连。这类器械的优点在于,它可以帮你控制运动姿势。
  Free weights are weights that that the user handles directly. They are not attached to a cable machine. Some people prefer these because they believe that although cable machines guide the motion of your exercise, they will not be precisely adapted to your body requirements, such as the length of your limbs. Free weights, if used correctly, can be more accurate than machines.
  负重器械是使用者直接受重的重力器械。它们与绳索拉力器并不相连。一些人更喜欢这类器械,因为他们认为,即使绳索拉力器可以帮你控制运动姿势,可它们不能准确地适应你的体质条件,例如你的肢体长度。如果使用正确的话,自由负重器械可以比机器更加准确到位。
  The most popular cable machines include the Lat Pulldown for exercising the back muscles and the Pectoral Fly for strengthening the chest muscles. There is also a cable machine that can be adapted for training a wide range of muscles, such as biceps and triceps.

  By far dumbbells and barbells are the most popular type of free weight equipment. They can be used to train several areas of the body, such as arms, back, shoulders, chest, legs etc.
